2023 will be remembered as one of the top vintages in Monticello. A cool long spring ushered in the season followed by an unseasonably dry spell, but the soil retained its moisture into summer. Rains were infrequent and short throughout the summer and ideal swings of temperatures between night and day continued throughout. Despite the considerably favorable vintage, our often-dewy mornings combined with our natural environment were enough to allow black rot development in our Montepulciano. The outbreak was late in the season, but massive and overnight. We were lucky to have a small crop of Montepulciano that was managed delicately to create a beautiful, if small, vintage with the true ethereal expression of Montepulciano as Cerasuolo.
